Navigating Pregnancy Yoga & Pilates

Every pregnancy is different and every woman feels different during her pregnancy physically and emotionally. Now, we know the female body is amazing, intuitive and goddess-like, but at some stage your amazing body starts to become a little heavier and little slower as you pour all of your energy into creating your baby.

Regardless, you want to be moving throughout your pregnancy to ensure you are preparing your body for the months and challenges ahead. However you decide to be active, you want to ensure it is safe, pregnancy related and engaging.

Specialized pregnancy yoga and pilates is here for this very reason! To build strength, endurance and create space for your growing baby. To help you prepare for the birth, learn important breathing and relaxation practices and embrace the flow of your emotions.

Evolvere has bespoke classes to ensure your pregnancy exercise meets your expectations, your limits and your desires. At the beginning of each practice we will sit down with you, talk about your expectations, any plans you may have, the importance of relaxation and precautions for safety for each trimester.

Reasons why a combination of Yoga Pilates will benefit you and your pregnancy:

  1. It’s all about you, gorgeous! Both pregnancy yoga and pilates are bespoke. Gentle enough for you start from 12 weeks (with the advice of your health care professional) and support the physical and emotional changes you are going through
  2. I’m crying at the Huggies ad! Breathing and movement can significantly reduce the risk of peri and post-natal depression and help bring you to your emotional, physical and mental peak.
  3. Ouch! My back! The combination of strength training and stretching will ease sciatic nerve pain and lower back pain
  4. Another hormone! During pregnancy, your body releases a hormone called ‘relaxin’ that helps your body to soften and become more prone to overstretching especially in your ligaments and tendons.   5. Let’s do this! Endurance challenging exercises are designed to mirror the contractions and provide space for practicing focus and correct breathing
  6. Breath through it – you’ve got this and we’ve got you! Benefits of deep breathing in yoga carries on following the birth of your baby. Breath is functional and used to tone your pelvic floor into peak condition and energises you to adjust to the demands of a newborn (even until Toddler years!)
  7. A dedicated practice of deep breathing is one of yoga’s main tools of discovery and connection. Benefiting strong connections between you, your partner and your baby as you enter life-changing parenthood.

October Summer Challenge

Throughout this summer challenge we had 8 determined challengers to shine from the inside out. They worked through sweat, sore muscles and adjusting appetites. Perhaps the biggest challenge was practicing every day. This discipline develops like a muscle; it needs time, consistency and mental motivation.

As Katy and Ali reflect on their journeys below, they identify that they needed to be focused and stay committed. How the challenge empowered them to be the best they can be.

‘The challenge has motivated me to push myself, be more determined, focused, committed and to show up! I have loved every minute. It has certainly been a highlight of my year.’ Says our Summer Challenge winner, Katy.

‘Tatiana has done a brilliant job of encouraging everyone taking part in the challenge and have supported us all to do our very best. I didn’t follow the meal plans for personal reasons but I did find all the nutrition information very interesting and helpful. I learnt a lot.’

Sometimes we forget, in all the hustle and bustle of our busy lives how food fuels us, makes our muscles and brain function to our optimum performance. Ali says ‘The nutrition guide was amazing. It has completely changed the way my family and I eat. I really enjoyed trying new foods with the meal plans helping me get back into a more organised routine. I work full time and with 2 small kids it’s easy to slip into a very boring routine and very tempting to opt for takeaway when we’re time poor. Eating so well over the month made me realise how much better my body can feel, how much more energy I had. My skin looks and feels better and my mood much better too.’

Our beautiful founder Tatiana says that the challenge was a challenge for her as well …

‘Any challenge needs a leader, and every day I needed to ensure I gathered all my positive vibes to share with our beautiful challengers. Truth is, they gave me the motivation to energise them! It was an amazing circle of support, friendship and positive energy.’

All up, the challenge has been the best thing that I have done for myself in a long time, I feel so happy with the results and I would more than highly recommend anyone doing this challenge in the future!’ Oh Ali, you’re making us blush!

The TOP TWO reasons why Yoga Foundations class is still relevant

We have a cultural aversion to the word ‘beginner’ and a ‘go hard or go home attitude’ to health and fitness. But being a beginner is nothing to be ashamed of, in fact it is vital to be a beginner. Yoga skills are gained incrementally.

I often say to my students, that you don’t go and play a piano concert in La Scala without learning to read music, practicing to play one hand at a time, memorizing the piece and have a mentioned practicing a lot? And only then, when you feel confident, you go for it.

Of course, going to a Yoga class is not as dramatic and you could definitely just wing it… but here are few things you’ll be missing on without a good foundation.

1. Breathing

Breath is the foundation of Yoga. If you are trying to keep up with the class and you have not learnt how to move with your breath, you are likely to strain or hold the breath while trying to hold the pose and the “yoga” – union between body mind and breath – disappears.
Our Yoga Slow Flow class will teach you how to breathe properly. You learn to let your breath lead the way and your body to follow. The breath becomes a barometer of your practice, telling you when to go deeper into a pose or when to take a step back.

2. Personal ownership

When we copy, or compete with our intermediate classmates, we don’t gain a sense of union and we risk injuring ourselves. And who knows if the person next to you is doing the poses correctly? No two bodies are the same and rarely will two people look the same in the same yoga pose.
Yoga Slow Flow will teach you the correct alignment and how to build each pose without injuring yourself and gives you a personal ownership of your yoga journey.
